RANKING JURASSIC PARK/WORLD MOVIES

Based On Their Dr. Wu Appearances

If you come from my website and thought this would be a Jurassic Park shrine; you were wrong, I fooled you. If you got to this page bc I shared the link directly; hi, and I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm here to take a look (and big emphasis on "look", mmh) at Dr. Henry Wu in all the movies. I'll likely come back to this site once in a while to add on, or remove, some things.

As much as I would love to, I do not have a PhD in Dr.Wuism -- neither did I go to college to major in it -- so, if I wrote something that pisses you off beyond belief, you can either tell your therapist about it or send me some hate mail addressed to >ratzzz173@gmail.com< where you can insult me, wish unspeakable things upon me, and most importantly correct me on something inexcusable I said about him and I might fix it and even repent my sins. You can also just reach out to me via e-mail to give your 2 cents.

Fist time he showed up. Not nearly enough, far less compared to the novel. All he did was erase notes and be too cocky for his own good. Very cute though, he was still so young. I could think about him all day.

He's cocky, immature, inexperienced and too sure of himself, but well-intentioned and attentive.

It's great to see him around a dinosaur in a tender way and thrilled to be here, since his few interactions with them change in the future.

// could you be mad at him breeding raptors when he looks at you like this -- not even Alan could //

His outfit reminds me of those single-use onesies hospital personnel sometimes have to wear when handling specific patients, but I actually don't know what it is called in this case. He looks sweet regardless.

One can only speculate what he wears underneath, but it's a collar shirt with what seems to be either a dark sweater on top or just very harsh shadow. He also wears a watch.

// sentient balloon, how flattering //

A roaring applause!...

... for the introduction of the black turtleneck!!

// Dr. Henry Wu STUNS in the newest release of JURASSIC PLAYBOY, with and without the lab coat //

If Jurassic World did something right, it's the inclusion of Dr. Wu. It's the movie that gave him the iconic turtleneck look.

All the scenes add more to Wu's character, who he is, compared to what we knew about him solely based on his rather short moment in Jurassic Park. While he didn't completely lose his cockiness, the traits that are being focused on here are a more serious and collected side, that tends to come off as distant.

In this movie the viewer learns that Dr. Wu doesn't care as much about staying true to the original form of a dinosaur than he cares about testing his limits. He won't scare away, if it means a new breakthrough in science. It also gives the impression he doesn't mind how outrageous a client's request might be, as long as he sees value in the process of creating.

// wearing his sleeves rolled up because he wanted us to see his bracelet //

The scene where he calmly drinks tea in his office, despite the uproar, and offers a cup as well, is a nice touch to his character.

// take slipped through where Wu doesn't wear his turtleneck with rolled up sleeves //

The dire escape via the helicopter makes it look like he himself is a highly important and delicate asset to be taken care of. Like a fair maiden...

// another outfit: dark outdoor jacket, over his now iconic turtleneck, complete with a suitcase //

Sorry, Wu, in the first movie you were denied of your moments, and it turned out to be a great classic -- now you finally got more screentime and the movie turns out to be kinda shit.

Still, I'll give Jurassic World an

And just like that, 3 years later, he stuns once more in the deserved spotlight he was denied of in the past!

// so smug, he enjoys what he hears //

He's directly working for a bad guy this time, since Mr. Masrani and Dr. Hammond weren't portrayed as such, but at least he can continue with his passion of creating dinosaurs, although with restraint in his freedom.

In comparison to the last movie, where he almost seemed void of morals, this one gives a first tiny peek into his rather complicated understanding of them. He's also very emotional and reactive.
I like to see it as that with each iteration of him from 2015 - 2021 he came closer to his eventual Dominion appearance -- and with the shift in what type of person he worked for right here, it isn't as random or sudden of a change as some frame it to be, in my humble opinion.

He appears a little more as a comedy relief character, compared to his scenes in the first World movie. A cute and somewhat refreshing take that I do not mind. The more sides of his they show, to make up for the great lack of scenes with Wu in Jurassic Park, the better.

// so offended, he detests what he hears //

It's clear that to Wu the creation of a dinosaur isn't only an act of science, but that he sees more in it to the point of viewing himself as an artist. It gives his cocky attitude and sudden emotions a motivation other than the "unexplainable behavior of yet another mad scientist" trope (which would've been a horrible path to go for this character after everything the viewer has seen of him). Fallen Kingdom isn't the first movie to show the more artistic side of Wu, since he's been poetic in the first World movie with his analogy about canaries, cats and monsters as well.

In this movie he ditches the lab attire completely, in favor of a new, fifth, outfit, ultimately stealing the show (or should I say "movie" :-)) in his fashionable gray blazer. The black turtleneck is still part of his signature, and thank god it is. The turtleneck doesn't make him look good; he makes the turtleneck look good.

// Oh, he looks simply great -- so sleek //

Dr. Wu doesn't manage to escape from the situation without a scratch this time. Instead there's some fanservice... Still, they rescued the sleeping beauty from yet another dangerous situation -- all hail the reappearing character armor.

// when Wu tries to fight off Franklin, you can see he wears a watch //

So, in this one Tim Cook made him make a bunch of pre-historic monster bugs starting a famine, because apparently everyone wanted to see a movie about that.
I sure did.

// if I were Tim Cook, I also would've locked him in my high-tech basement //

Wu is very beautiful in this movie. He made melancholy a warm and desirable state. Everything from the defeated way he speaks, to the gray streaks in his shoulder-length hair, and choice of loose-fitting soft clothes and earthy color palette is perfect. What a beautiful path it all went down.

He feels a little freakish, almost predatory for a loss of a better word, with how thrilled he has been talking about Charlotte, but he was turned into a Biosyn basement dweller and last time he's seen the sun was 6 months ago, so I'll overlook it.

// would it hurt them to at least feed him something different than Tim Cook's stale granola bars, or is it part of the psychological abuse they put him through? Hand him a tequila or smth, I can't stand seeing him like this //

Who doesn't want to see a confident know-it-all end up a pathetic old man who eventually finds peace in the end?

First of all: The show's character was not voiced by the movie's actor, BD Wong, despite being based on his visuals.

Now with that out of the way, before I'm going through episode for episode, Wu get's mentioned every once in a while throughout the whole show. While most of them don't add anything new, I want to point out two moments:

Season 2 Episode 1: A Beacon of Hope, while Sammy (one of the main characters) searches for life-saving tips in a Jurassic World Guide Book, she points out that to her dismay the rest of an important chapter is full of "glamour shots" of Dr. Wu, instead of further information. Sadly not a single example was shown.

Season 2 Episode 3: The Watering Hole, three of the six main characters find themselves in the lab again. Brooklynn stumbles across a broken picture frame with a photo of Dr. Wu together with his lab assistant Eddie. He's rather off-model and cross-eyed. After picking it up from the floor, she carelessly flings the frame right back to the ground.

S01 E02: Secrets

Episode two and we're already getting him. Already entertained.

They made him really tall, for whatever reason. In general he suffers from the same fate as all the characters in this show, which is a mad case of Sims-Knock-Off fever. Despite all, they put in the extra work for his model, including more detailed facial expressions and animations, and extra steps such as adding blemishes. Props where props are due, especially with the tight budget in mind.

No matter the universe, that smug charm of his will always find him.

Episode Ranking: C 2/5

S03 E04: Clever Girl

In this episode Dr. Wu doesn't show up in person, but rather in video logs on his laptop, documenting on E750 -- the Scorpios Rex -- his first hybrid dinosaur. The recordings go from Wu being delighted, to him disappointed with Masrani's reaction, to becoming aware of the growing danger and getting attacked by his creation on camera, to ultimately freezing the Scorpios Rex for good.

// at first I lol'd, but then I serious'd //
// knocked out by the venom from the attack, two assistants, one of them Eddie, hunch over him //

Episode Ranking: B 2.5/5

S03 E09: Whatever It Takes

Accompanied by two mercenaries, Dr. Wu is back on Isla Nublar to retrieve his research laptop, specifically since the search parties can't seem to find the Indominous Rex sample.

// not only a new outfit -- a raincoat inspired by his lab coat -- but a black umbrella as well //

He's treated like a princess in this episode, or more so sees himself as such. Little arrogant behavior here and there, and of course not lifting a single finger when it comes to physical work. Sekai de ichiban ohime-sama, and all.

Episode Ranking: B 3/5

S03 E10: Stay on Mission

Wu has to babysit Brooklynn, as she's been taken hostage by one of the two mercenaries, only to be released in exchange for Wu's laptop the rest of the kids got. Brooklynn and Wu have a fun dynamic. It was nice seeing him trying to handle a bratty teen.

Dr. Wu is no nature guy. Quickly exhausted from the long walks, distracted by the mosquitos trying to sting him, almost slipping on a tree log despite already crawling on all four, easily startled and weak -- in addition to a rather poor survival instinct.

// this guy collected near-death experiences like others collect Pokémon cards //

In this episode a humane side beyond his arrogance and coldness is shown. In a way, this episode warms the viewer up to the idea of a potential Wu redemption arc, but not really timeline-wise as this episode would take place between World and Fallen Kingdom.

Episode Ranking: S 4/5

Calculating the average, it would be a B. However, a few fun things were added, so the show gets a bonus of half a star, resulting in an A. But since he has a different voice actor and is 500ft tall, I have to remove half a star.

Which means Camp Cretaceous gets a fair

S04 E03: Familiar Faces

// ??? //

So cute -- insanely woobified with big sad eyes and soft movements -- but so so cute... They managed to make his model look so huggable, it's crazy to say out loud.

Either Brooklynn has been secretly lifting weights, or Wu is the weakest man in the Chaos Theory universe, either way she threw him around like he's a rag doll. Not even that tranquilizer could save him.

// move over, Brook, it's my turn //

Wu's model has been remade to reflect his Dominion appearance, but instead of a striped button-up shirt he wears a cyan one, and his clothes are in a tighter fit, too. Wu still seems to be too tall, but it's not as noticeable as he stands and sits mostly hunched. While Dominion Wu's overall shape language is on the wider side, Chaos Theory Wu is lanky -- but it makes him appear very fragile, which suits the show's take on him.

// coming to terms with his actions, shortly before wording it like a youtube apology video //

Chaos Theory gets its very own Wu redemption, which focus lies in him indirectly helping the kids by asking for their help, showing them that in the end he isn't that big evil mastermind they've come to hate during their time on Isla Nublar. But not without them using him as a verbal punching bag (and Brooklynn using him as a literal one) first.

// lending his car only for them to immediately fuck it up -- no respect //
I don't want to give it a B, but it didn't deserve an A either...
can I give it a good B? Like B+?? Can I just do that?? I'll do that.

The Sequel, Chaos Theory, gets away with a
